I like Thanksgiving, NYE, Australia Day, Easter, and Queen's B-day (Queen are my favourite band; and HE's not my king!). I hate Child-neglect Day (mothers day), Child-Abuse Day (fathers day), War-mongering Days and Shitmas. I used to hate my B-day before i reframed it completely. I used to wish i was never born, thrashing out Nirvana's Heart-shaped box. Nowadays, i see it as an opportunity for my friends who cherish me to show their appreciation for having me in their lives. 💜😊

My family has been a victim of a narcissistic person’s no contact, which left everyone so sad and confused. My parents no longer have any contact with their grandchild or their great-grandchild because of this person. And it’s all because we responded to a post on Facebook with “care” emojis, which made this person angry.

Dr Ramani, you have seriously saved my life and sanity. I’ve been with my husband 31 years, just passed our 30th and went on a 2 day getaway and I honestly just celebrated myself for the endurance of my strength and healing over the past several years when I began rising up to my own potency and inner sovereignty and realized that I’d been demised by an actual narcissist, not knowing what that even was prior. Tracing back to having been raised by narcissists and never knew what hit me! Everything you lay out describes my life and the prison I was formerly living in. I am too traumatized to date again

The true meaning of Thanksgiving was originally the celebration and gratitude of abundance of harvest brought about by the free market capitalism replacing the failed socialist experiment in which people had previously been starving. It had little to do with family, God, etc. Those things were a given back then and as leftist politics have become increasingly normalized, it has morphed away from the true meaning and into those other things. We don't celebrate it here in Australia, but i wish we did. It's one of the very few holidays i really like. We don't celebrate Halloween either and i have no time for it.

I went no contact with my mother years ago because I could no longer take the lies, gaslighting, contempt, triangulation, diminishing, manipulation etc. She wanted to do the same thing to my daughter. She could not accept that I was becoming more successful and secure in my own life. She has never offered to help me with anything. The last time I reached out to her she said she will see me in heaven, which scared me. She went no contact when I went no contact but it was more because she does not want to lose the control and to keep me in my place. It feels like pure hate, punishment. I sent her pictures of my grandson and she never even replied.

Became isolated from family and friends

Thanks for this. Have been feeling like a douche, few moments of doubt, if i am in the right. I think it's spot on when i recollect a few weeks back. Paths had crossed, and dude said " i know we have our moments where we annoy eachother" (we live together, seperate floors) Then i was stunned. Now i'm kind of smiling thinking. Dude.. you have been A-nnoying. Your En-Tie frickin' Life. Every. Single. Moment of communication. There has been Grandieur. Unwarranted if i might add. Sigh. For being a family member, i had just taken him as he is. I'm growing old. My time is becoming more precious. Realistically, going in to the future, i pick my poison. I got 99 problems and dude isn't one. *and for apologies, no need. Too late. Just the insight, and feel stupid is enough. So yeah, kinda guilty there 😅

My mother to a TEE!!!! She praised me to other people, but rarely in front of me. Directly to me, though, it was all disapproval and tearing me apart, and THAT was never in front of other people! I was never good enough for her.

Also there is the 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' trap... if there is no contact, guilt will be used against you- period. Narcissists hate when you can predict their behavior. When I would try to talk with my mother about any conflict, she would insist nothing was wrong for days, until she had her defense ready- grievances, excuses, blame for others( from the past 40 years to the present) to "talk" and explain why she...blah, blah, blah- isnt responsible or it was my fault. You can't be a grown-up with narcissists

My brother malignant narc lives with my parents. Brainwashing my dad but my dad acts narcissistic too. I don't know if he's always been a narc or if it's just my brother's influence. they can't control me so I've distanced myself. My dad took the picture of me off of the refrigerator and off of the dresser. I noticed it when I stopped by to visit mom. What on earth does that mean? Are they erasing me?

lol I have ADHD and I *wish I had less empathy* for others. I wasn't diagnosed until I was a junior at UC Berkeley. I have been formally assessed for it 3 times over the last 16years. I'm not sure that having ADHD is a valid way to diagnose someone as having a lack of empathy for others. victim mentality passive aggressive like a bull in a china closet doing shady things in private, while looking good in public lack of self-awareness avoiding addressing their own shame insecure will rage and lash out at anyone who provokes their shame utter lack of self-examination and clarity can't stand someone ending a relationship with them or distancing from a friendship tough person exterior grandiosity don't want to try hard want things handed to them they lash out the most at the people who support them the most victimhood is part of their identity they hate to be ordinary failure to launch they're takers who only give when it benefits them (like looking good in public) they aren't going to change they aren't contributing to the household financially rigid about their rituals it's their way or the highway clean to a fault can appear obsessive compulsive germaphobic approach (to counter their internal sense of feeling dirty) used to control others & manage their own insecurity will become furious with anyone who questions this way will only see things their way shaming people around them walk on eggshells narcissists do well with babies but not teens where they have their own will others get burned out trying to keep up with their order treat others as objects that serve their needs i.e.. Such excellent points in the difference between the way the narcissist and the non-narcissistic person in the relationship go no contact. In my experience as a survivor of a 5-year relationship with a narcissist, though, when I finally went no contact, I have to admit that the anger and the desire to punish him was also wrapped up in the grief, guilt, and sadness of the loss. I did think, "I'll show him!" but it felt like I was claiming my voice and my power after years of mistreatment, not trying to control him. My anger fueled my resolve to protect myself. So I can't really claim completely pure motivations of self-protection. I did what I had to do to stop the Dance.

I have a horrible older sister. Very closed minded, always wanting her way or the highway. She would often tell me how "cool" and "famous" she is and that she has so many friends unlike me. She would directly mock me in front of my parents and our brother's family. The worst part was she mocked my livelihood. I work in the hospital as a Nurse and ahe couldn't stomach my job. Nasty woman but in her and my father's eyes she's angelic. I want justice for all the pain and humiliation.

Needless (self-sacrificing and self-denying) -- self-compassionate and self-aware (balanced, loving) -- needy (pathetic, desperate, poor self esteem). This is a very useful spectrum to keep in mind for those of us still healing and finding a balanced way to live and love. Thank you.

My daughter takes two to three antidepressants and Xanax and she'd become evil

She did her typical neglectful silence treatment after i called her out on her behavior. I went yellow rock (kids involved) and moved to a spare bedroom (3 months). What a refreshing reset! I got clarity! Applied for a promotion, interviewed and as of yesterday was notified I got the position. I started silently working on a divorce 1 month ago. Don't care about the financial hit I may occur. She has a good paying job also so it shouldn't be TOO BAD! I hope...lol

I have a bad feeling I may have narcissistic traits…if my husband were to share great news about being special in some way and they’re being recognized, I would feel hurt…it’s because I feel like I’m invisible and my sense of self worth is totally shot. To see him happy and it wasn’t due to something I did would make my insecurity flare up. I may keep it to myself but yeah, I would feel lousy. It saddens me that this is a trait. I may have to do more self reflection and figure out how to fix myself.

True that, I was left with my 4 kids. After my partner got violent, with me , she wanted me to stay home with our boys . I am a landscaper. She works, in the school district. Her mom took her to a alcoholic rehab place,. She blames me. for it now it's been almost 3 months. no call, or anything.but mom is in touch with her. Now I'm going crazy.but my kids say We okay dad. She say she'll be back home, that hurts. I'm in limbo any advice for my situation.. thanks.

My narc dad has never grown up, his late enabler/flying monkey mother allowed him to continue this way. His brutal father was a mean jerk. Dad treated Mom like s..., his father taught him that women don't matter. Dad learned that too well, he dished out abuse to Mom, for a long time, decades ago; she divorced his sorry ass! I have no contact with him. His loss!

Can a man be a partial narcissist? If I say ‘let’s go see a movie today’ he’ll say sure. If I say I want to meet up with someone he says ‘that’s good, you should see friends more often’. But if I criticize something he did that over and over again shows that he never thinks about me and makes poor decisions that are insensitive as a result, he turns into a really nasty person. He’s quite cruel and judgmental to my sister and niece as well too because they have ‘challenges’ and personality ‘flaws’ that are not acceptable to him, instead of seeing them as humans with feelings. So is this just an impatient and critical man or a narcissist? He overlooks me and only converses if I initiate conversations but isn’t mean unless I bring up issues. He does put the kids ahead of me in all instances. His world revolves around them and I’m invisible.

Hi Dr. Ramani. I have been listening to you for several years. This video is one of the first I heard. it impacted me so much that I grabbed a paper bag and started taking notes. I was sitting in my car waiting for my kids to get out of school and had nothing else to write on. I’m currently working on a book about forgiveness, and I found myself remembering the things said in this video. I’m writing about how sometimes we need to emotionally distance ourselves from people who are hurtful. I still have that paper bag! You don't even realise your health is deteriorating cos you obsessed with keeping the narc healthy cos he is getting all the attention.

I went no contact from my narc husband after telling him to leave and he is now gone no contact. Even when we see each other in church BUT posts on socially media where HE knows mutual people will tell me what he posts. We have kids together and he is even avoiding them and alleging that I am the cause of them not communicating with him. I am not communicating with him for MY protection ONLY!! He is using I as a tool to victimize himself and make me the monster

I don’t know if I have a narcissistic husband or not…he’s insulting when he’s irate with me - can’t handle any criticism or me pointing out something he did that was wrong (like dumping a smoothie down the sink I just made). That’s when I’m told I’m a (insert swear word) or I have all the issues or whatever else is cruel to say. The more ‘casual’ insults are ‘you spend all the time in the kitchen so I have to handle all the kid related stuff’. It’s true, I do as my child is on a special diet and then after dinner I have to make the lunches for the next day. So I’m miserable but I don’t know if this can be fixed…if he’s a narcissist there’s no point in trying. That’s why I’m trying to figure this out.

My second(late)step-mother, a cop, when I told her that my dad sexually abused me, said "It's not that bad" the bitch!

With everyone filming with smart phones why not use it to record their behaviour and language. There would be such a demand education wise in help identifying their toxic ways.

My sister was one of few that knew I had a serious eating disorder in my late teens. I was paying for therapy to treat it myself, so I didn’t have much money left over for anything else. One day, my sister wanted to go to Disneyworld and share a hotel bc she couldn’t afford it herself. I told her I couldn’t bc i didn’t have money. She lashed out and told me I’d have money if I didn’t go to therapy and that the eating disorder was my fault. I never knew this was a trait of narcissists.

Mam, forgiving is a unforgivable sin while with narcissist. And forgiveness is a curse.

Dr Ramani! You clearly know my mother! I have been listening to her “sacrifices” for 50 years. Actual statements made by her when I was a child, “I gave up my life to have children” “don’t ever have kids, they will ruin your life” “you shouldn’t have kids, you are too selfish” “being a mother is a thankless job so I’ve had to learn to live without the thank you’s” I remember constantly feeling guilty for being alive and knowing that I could never ever pay her back for “all the things she has done for me”.

Anyone can gaslight. It doesn’t have to be a narcissist.
